Just Because

Just because I can, I figured I’d answer 50 random questions about myself for you. Because, well, sometimes it’s nice to know who you’re reading about.

  1. Favorite meal — I love a variety of soups and stews. If I had to pick one…my tomato basil soup would probably be my favorite.
  2. Any phobias? — Totally. Creepy crawlies. Including slithering things.
  3. Favorite color — Blue. It’s so calming. And pretty.
  4. If you could open your own restaurant, what would it be? — Soups Galore! Soups are some of my favorite things to make and are so tasty! And, really, who doesn’t love a delicious bowl of hot soup?
  5. Favorite craft — For now, sewing. It changes with the wind. And I got a new sewing machine for Christmas this year so I’m having fun with that.
  6. Any hidden talents? — Yes. But if I tell you, it won’t be hidden any more!
  7. Favorite crafting toy — This one is a toss up between my new sewing machine and my Xyron. They do completely different things. My sewing machine lets me be crafty. My Xyron lets me be crafty…and be organized (an added bonus!).
  8. What’s your favorite feature of a home? — The people in it. But if you want a physical feature, a fireplace and kitchen are probably tied.
  9. Favorite flower — Sunflower. Big and bright and beautiful. Although, I’m not particularly picky when it comes to flowers. 🙂
  10. What’s the hardest thing for you? — Spontaneity. Difficult. Very…very…very difficult. To the point it’s almost impossible. But I’m working on it.
  11. Favorite TV show — I like medical and crime dramas: NCIS (the original and LA), Law and Order (SVU is my favorite but I won’t be too picky when there’s nothing else available), House, Criminal Minds
  12. Have you ever been in the news (TV/newspaper/etc)? — Actually, yes. I’ve been in the newspaper twice that I’m aware of. The first time, I was about 5 or 6 and the most recent time, it was work-related. That was about 3 years ago. The work-related incident happened to make it to the TV news that night, as well. (It was almost embarrassing. The news crews made it to our trauma scene before we did. Not sure how that happened. But, of course, we waited for the police to secure the scene before we decided to march in their — and even then they had assault rifles strapped across their bodies. Made me feel really safe…)
  13. Favorite movie — I love cartoon movies…and kids movies. Cars, Toy Story (all 3 of them), Beauty and the Beast, UP, Despicable Me, The Lion King, The Incredibles…they’re all good. Movies like The Terminal, Batman Begins, PS I Love You, and Law Abiding Citizen all find their way onto my screen as well. (I like a wide variety.)
  14. Do you play any instruments? — I used to. Does that count? I played violin (and why I gave that up, I’ll never know…and I kick myself for it now…), piano and clarinet seriously. I dabbled in others.
  15. Favorite kitchen appliance — Crock pot! I would have a difficult time without my beloved crock pot. Makes life so much easier. I imagine if I had a normal 9-5 job, it would be a true life-saver.
  16. What’s the chore you hate doing the most? — Cleaning the bathrooms. Enough said.
  17. Favorite trip — Niagara Falls with my sweet hubby. He kidnapped me and took me to Canada for our honeymoon…just like he told Dad he wouldn’t do. Silly boy.
  18. What’s one thing not many people know about you? — I know American Sign Language. I’ve gotten much more rusty over the years. I started learning when I was in 8th grade…so it’s been a while. I get to use it, every now and again, at work so it keeps some of my skills up. I know the basics…and I can always finger spell if all else fails!
  19. Favorite sound — Ocean waves crashing on the shore or a fire roaring in the fireplace (house fires make the same great sound…just have a terrible outcome).
  20. What’s one quality that you admire most in people? — Integrity. Without integrity, what else is there?
  21. Favorite sport — Gymnastics. It can be extremely artistic (there are some gymnasts who are awful at that part) and it requires a significant amount of athleticism. Dancing (ballroom/Latin/etc) is also pretty fantastic to watch. I used to do dancing (ballet, tap and jazz) and gymnastics…but that was another life.
  22. Are you an early-bird or night-owl? — I’m certainly more of an early-bird than a night-owl. However, since I’ve been out of work for a few weeks, my schedule has been thrown waaay off so I’m kind of both…just don’t expect me to be functional at the end of the day even if I’m conscious.
  23. Favorite season — Spring. Everything is coming back to life, everything is fresh and beautiful. Flowers are blooming. There is color everywhere! And the temperatures are pretty wonderful around North Carolina.
  24. Dog or cat? — Tough one. I grew up with both and love both for different reasons. Cats are more convenient, especially for my work schedule (don’t have to let them out to the bathroom). But, since I have a super-wonderful husband who could let a puppy out, that’s not an issue. Cats love to cuddle…but so do dogs. And dogs tend to be more playful all throughout their life. I go with both.
  25. Favorite dessert — I love just about anything chocolate. One of my favorite new desserts (which includes chocolate) is my S’mores Pie.
  26. Have you ever won anything? — Until recently, no. In the last few months, I have been the lucky winner of 2 giveaways! The first was for a craft book: Make and Takes for Kids by Marie LeBaron. (I really need to write a post on that.) It’s a super-cute book with all kinds of craft ideas for kids (and grown-up kids). And the other is a Xyron 9″ Creative Station. More to come on that one too.
  27. Favorite ice cream flavor — Mint Chocolate Chip if I’m finding it at the grocery. If I’m going to Baskin Robbins, Peanut Butter Chocolate. Not peanut butter cup. But real peanut butter. A-mazing.
  28. Sunrises or sunsets? — Sunsets give the most vibrant colors usually…and you don’t have to get up early for them. But sunrises seem so much more peaceful.
  29. Favorite book — Blood, Sweat and Tea by Tom Reynolds :: it’s a book from the streets of London written by Brian Kellet under his pseudonym about his adventures as (the equivalent of) a paramedic in the London Ambulance Service. A Paramedic’s Story: Life, Death and Everything In Between by Kelly Grayson is another great book about EMS. It has some great stories from Kelly, a paramedic in the southern part of the United States. Both of these guys tell real-life stories from their own interactions on their rigs. It’ll give you an idea about the true day-to-day life of a paramedic and the challenges that we face.
  30. If you were to have your own business, what would it be? — Something craft related. What specifically, I’m not sure yet. But that seems logical for me. Or maybe food related. A bakery or pastry shop? Ohhh…
  31. Favorite restaurant — Chili’s is a top favorite in this house (we love the chips and salsa and that’s a top reason we go but now that I found a recipe for it…we still like the restaurant). Olive Garden or Carrabba’s are both favorites, as well. Jon and I are picky about our food but in general like the same things. (For as picky as we each are, that’s pretty amazing!)
  32. What age do you consider “old”? — That’s continually changing. I used to think 25 was old but with that near on the horizon, I feel like that’s really young. My “new” version of “old” will probably change again once I get closer to that age.
  33. Favorite household appliance — Washer and dryer. They come as a pair so I feel like I can cite both of them. They are a life-saver when getting all of my laundry done for work (which is a lot).
  34. Have you ever cut your own hair? — I cut my bangs. By myself. When I was in kindergarten. At an angle. Oops.
  35. Favorite fast food — Chick-Fil-A is really good (and they’re really good to me when I’m on duty). And sub shops: Firehouse Subs (recently rediscovered that one), Jersey Mike’s and Jimmy John’s are my top three. But I’ll certainly still eat at Subway and Quiznos.
  36. Do you prefer to drink from the cup or from a straw? — At home, straight from the cup is fine. When I’m out, I prefer a straw.
  37. Favorite cereal — Honey nut cheerios, though I’m really not a huge cereal person.
  38. Do you sing in the shower? — Yeah. I do. Sometimes. Not all that often, but I’ve certainly been known to.
  39. Favorite non-household animal — Horse. I used to love horseback riding when I was younger. I haven’t been in a very long time, though. I see a field trip coming soon!
  40. Tea or coffee? — Tea. Coffee is…blech. I take my tea sweet. And I can take it hot or cold.
  41. Favorite table game — Scattergories, Catch Phrase, Uno, Apples to Apples…I think those are my top games. (I didn’t say I was good at them.)
  42. What’s the best thing about your job? — Helping people. It’s cliche, I know, but it’s very rewarding to really be able to help someone (especially when that help is to truly make an impact on their health). It’s really special to be able to run into that person later and find out that they’re doing even better! It makes all the other…crap…better to deal with.
  43. Favorite sports team — Depends on what level or sport you’re talking about. If you want to talk about college, it’s NC State all the way! For other sports, it generally becomes the home-state team. Hockey: Carolina Hurricanes, Baseball: Durham Bulls (minors) and St. Louis Cardinals (majors, by default…thanks Jon :-P), Football: Carolina Panthers.
  44. What is your biggest pet peeve? — That depends on where I am. At work, it’s a dirty truck (inside or out, but especially on the inside — don’t let me find it dirty!). At home, it’s a dirty/messy kitchen. In general, it’s safe to say that clutter/mess is one of my biggest pet peeves. The other is tardiness. Big time. (Time. Haha.)
  45. Favorite thing to do on a rainy day — Listen to the rain. It’s so relaxing!
  46. Left-handed or right-handed? — Right-handed for writing but mostly ambidextrous for other things, including cutting/dicing (knife), scissors work, starting IVs and I’m left-hand dominant for driving.
  47. Favorite school subject — Anatomy and physiology. I love learning about the human body! It’s an absolutely fascinating thing.
  48. Coke or Pepsi? — Coke, and Coke products. Definitely. If that’s not available and I don’t want tea, I’ll still drink tea before I go to Pepsi.
  49. Favorite song — “Love and Laundry” by Point of Grace. As life gets busier, I am beginning to gain a greater understanding behind the meaning of this song…Oh I wish that there were more than, 24 hours in a day, I haven’t found it yet but there’s gotta be a way, And I keep praying that, I can get everything done, And still have time for love, And a load of laundry
  50. Do you have any siblings? — One brother of my own and two brother-in-laws.
I think 50 questions is enough. I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a bit about me, my favorites, likes, dislikes and other random bits.

*sigh* Gymnastics is an athletic competition, not a sport. Sports don’t have judges to give scores. 😛
