Angled Measuring Cups

About two months ago, Jon and I spent the last of a gift card that we received as a wedding gift nearly a year ago…and we have been very pleased with this purchase! Let me explain…

Typical measuring cups only show you the measurements on the side of the cup. This requires you to bend over or squat down to counter height to make sure you have the correct amount of your ingredient. With solids, this isn’t a big deal as you can pick them up to see — but with liquids, it’s much more difficult since they slosh around.

In light of my back injury a few months ago, bending down to look at these measurements was not something that I was able to do for a while (though, thankfully, I’m much better now!). Since cooking is one of the few things I was still able to do while out of work, with it such a huge stress reliever and as much as I love to do it, I needed something to help with this because you just could not keep me from it.

My current measuring cups had also seen their better days. They are…erm, were old and had developed some inner cracks. And, I guess what I’m trying to say is that I found a great excuse to finish up the gift card and get this lovely thing:

Yes, it’s a box. But what’s inside the box is what’s worth sharing with you!

Three amazing measuring cups!

I can hear you now: “I have no idea why you think a measuring cup is so ‘amazing.’ I’ve never seen one.” Well, let me start with some of the boring details about this set and then I’ll be happy to share my favorite thing with you.

If you find yourself purchasing (or on the receiving end of) a box set like this, you will find 3 measuring cups inside: 1 cup, 2 cups and 4 cups in size. One of the benefits is that you can fill it up to the “capacity” and still have room so you’re not sloshing ingredients around or out like I felt like I would often do with some of my old measuring cups who “capacity” line was mere millimeters away from the top.

Speaking of millimeters, you have the option of measuring your liquids and solids in the metric system if you so choose…or the good ‘ole standard system that we choose to use here in the United States because we have to be different. Cup, ounce and milliliter markings can all be found on these fabulous measuring cups.

An added bonus is that they have a very soft and comfortable handle to grab hold of. I know that seems like a small thing — but it certainly helps. It’s also a rounded handle and not a thin plastic sleeve that just happens to be hanging out from the measuring cup. Like I said, silly…but when you spend as much time in the kitchen as I do, the little things make it all the more enjoyable.

The measuring cups are also dishwasher safe and microwave safe, which is an exceedingly common thing these days — but you always want to check that! The only warning that you will find on the box is that is says not to microwave fats, such as oil, margarine and butter. Aside from that, you should be good to go.

Now…drum roll please…my favorite feature, and arguably one of the reasons we decided to invest in these now with my bad back is this:

Inside, there is an angled surface which allows you to stand over top of your measuring cup and pour, with confidence, that you are ending up with the correct amount of ingredient. And YOU NEVER HAVE TO BEND OVER TO CHECK!! (Of course, you still can. But why would you??) I have been using these for a few weeks and it is wonderful!

It works the best for liquids, as they are able to freely flow on top of the angled surface and downward without an issue.

Solids and powders still work well but take a little more convincing to make sure it’s all level. As I pour, give the measuring cup a slight tap and shake every now and again to ensure it’s all going where it’s supposed to.

The more solid the ingredient, the more convincing it will take to come out of the measuring cup (but that’s always the case, right?). It’s nothing that a spatula can’t handle! (And I do recommend a flattened spatula over a spoon or angled spatula — it gets into the small areas better.)

Overall, I have really enjoyed these lovely measuring cups over the past few weeks. I highly recommend them…especially if you do a lot of cooking and want to save your back (or already have a bad back). They have been very useful in my various cooking adventures and I think they will remain in my kitchen for a very long time. If you want to pick this set of three up for yourself, you can find it for around $20-$25, depending on where you look (though I don’t guarantee that price by any means). I would argue that it’s a great price for three cups with all the features you get…and potentially saving your back (which is worth more than you can put money to!).

If you have some, let me know what you think…the good, bad and the ugly. If you get them, let me know your thoughts. I’m having a hard time finding anything negative about them.
