My kitchen must haves – Part 1

If you are new here, I love to cook. Based on my recent posts, you may not be able to tell that – but I’ve had something preoccupying my mind lately.

Anyway, I have…for a while now…wanted to share with you the top 5 items I have in my kitchen that I love. As much as I love cooking and baking, I have a list of things that I need in order to make my experience in the kitchen that much easier. Without further ado, I present the first installment of my kitchen necessities.

Today’s must have:

Cookie or ice cream scoop

Cookie scoopI can hear you now…”What? That makes your “top 5″ list of kitchen necessities? How?” A few years ago, I was making muffins and was getting increasingly frustrated with trying to get the batter into the muffin pan…without making a mess. I always used a table spoon to try and assist the batter to the tin but, inevitably, it would drop off the side of the spoon on the edge of the pan.

As my frustration mounted on the particular occasion, I began rummaging through my kitchen drawers, trying to find something that would work better than a regular ‘ole spoon. Alas, I stumbled across my ice cream scoop! I gave it a try and it worked splendidly.

Shortly after Jon and I were married, I had a large cookie project to complete and found a cookie scoop at Bed Bath & Beyond that I purchased. I find the cookie scoop to be a better size for getting the right amount of batter into the muffin tins. The ice cream scoop, while very beneficial, can often add too much if you’re not careful. But, the principle of the scoop that you can empty with the press of a button (especially for the thicker batters) is what I have found most beneficial. (The scoop I have holds 1 1/2 tablespoons of batter or dough.)
